How Minimalism and Frugality are Better for the Environment

For many a season we have known that minimalism and frugality combined gives freedom.  We have known that those two lifestyles have the power to give more time, more money, and less stress to those that practice them.  But, did you know it is a more sustainable way to live?

When you are holding on to your money because you are frugal, you aren’t consuming goods.  When you are a minimalist, you aren’t buying anything you do not need.  So the frugal minimalist does not contribute to the demand for goods like a common consumer would.

The frugal minimalist will buy less; and when they buy, they tend to go for quality over quantity.  The clothing choices that a frugal minimalist will make will tend to stay out of the landfill longer.  This is because the frugal person will purchase clothing items carefully, and will choose durable over fast fashion.  The minimalist will be ruthless on fit, because each item has to pull its weight in a capsule wardrobe situation where there is not room for ill-fitted pieces or flimsy fabric.  Thoughtful decisions about timeless and classic styles will be made, so that the clothing items can be worn for several years to come without needing to be updated.

The frugal minimalist will not bring in a bunch of trendy, small appliances for the kitchen.  They won’t be updating their phone at the earliest convenience.  Their homes won’t be overwhelmed by gizmos galore.  They are picky, and once they choose, they commit to their devices until they break or cannot be supported by the makers of those devices.

The frugal minimalist also will choose a gas-sipping vehicle that is likely not an SUV.  They will choose to hang on to these vehicles, driving them to their deaths.  This prevents demand for new vehicles to be made.  It is a better use of resources.

The frugal minimalist will not try a bunch of beauty products and have containers littering their countertops and the beaches.  Once they know what works, they stick with the products of their choice.  They don’t experiment, and they use what they have until it is gone and wait to buy more until it is really needed.

The frugal minimalist will create less trash overall.  They may go weeks or even months without setting the garbage bin out on the curb.  Their amount of packaging and waste is lower than the average American family.  If the frugal minimalist also applies their lifestyle to food and grocery buying, food waste may also be decreased.

We knew for a while that minimalism and frugality has benefits for the individual and the family.  It also has benefits for the community and the earth.  Adopting frugal minimalist principles is a win for you and the planet we live on.  Today is a perfect day to start this road and #liveyourbestwithless.
